Denis Mardle

Sad news, gang:

I just learned today that Denis Mardle, the elderly British
member of the VMS list, has died. Mardle was the host of the
June 1998 "Second British" VMS meeting, where I met (among others)
him and Gabriel Landini for the first time.

Mardle was full of enthusiasm and energy, much hampered by
confinement to a wheel chair: alert, curious, encouraging,
friendly, somewhat dictatorial in manner (as befitted his age
and infirmity), obviously full of stories and ideas, obviously
frustrated because he could not carry out a fraction of what he
had planned in regards to the Voynich manuscript.

The Voynich manuscript has lost a good friend; I believe I have,
too. I'll miss him, as I'm sure all who met him will, as well.

Jim
