VMS -- Botany (f95r) Berberis
This is an interesting though somewhat complicated plant to try and
classify. I suspect that this is a variety of Berberis; however,
identifying which one will take a considerable amount of effort, since
there appear to be over a hundred varieties. The berries may be either
all red, white, or blue in color. I imagine this is relatively easy to
verify from the original VMS folio. Notice the thick stem and roots and
the thorned leaves. This is consistent with descriptions that I have
seen for Berberis. Tthere is growth at the base of the shoot. No
flowers, rhizomes/tubers present. Some examples are offered but an exact
hit has not yet been made.
