Re: Folding keys etc...

Hi Nick and all :-)

you wrote    -=se=-> I WRITE <-=se=-

......snip....
 Each of the 8 gallows symbols indicates a particular folding of the key,
 which would open out a pair of matching translation lists. Each of these
 pairs would look like:-

          Gallows#1's pair of lists (7 more pairs elsewhere):-

                  Original        Voynichese
                  ----------      -----------------
                  A       gallows#2
                  B       8
                  C       4
                  D       o
                  E       gallows#7
                  F       c
                  G       i
                  H       9
                  I       gallows#6
                  (etc)

 But if there was a long gallows character, with a set of Voynichese
 characters beneath it, where do you "character transfer" them to?

-=se=-> again you lost me here, the folding KEY has but 9 areas
available on it

when UNFOLDED (not being used as a gallows KEY) it would look like:

---------------------------
:  C    :   A    :   D    :
:       :        :        :
:_______:________:________:
:       :        :        :
:  H    :        :   E    :
:       :        :        :
:_______:________:________:
:       :        :        :
:  G    :   B    :   F    :
:       :        :        :
:_______:________:________:

The characters found under a LONG Gallows are inserted 'simply' across
the top (left to right) and down to the bottom "so if the characters"
were say 1x,2x,3x,4x (space) 5x,6x,7x,8x then:

AREA on KEY PAPER    Character

         C        =     1x
         A        =     2x
         D        =     3x
         H        =     4x

         E        =     5x
         G        =     6x
         B        =     7x
         F        =     8x
<-=se=-

 If you scan through the whole document for long gallows, how do you know in
 what order to put the characters underneath them into the lists?

-=se=-> as explained above <-=se=-

 Also: it may sound odd, but when is a gallows a long gallows? I've gone
 through all the online pages I have to hand, and tried to categorise the
 larger-than-normal gallows characters into groups (below): and there appear
 to be many types of long, longish, and just plain large gallows. :-/

 Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....

......end snip....
-=se=-> Wow THANKS FOR YOUR LINK REFERENCE's now I'm more in the DARK
then ever about what ES was telling me (ha.haaa) -- I will try to
PRINT OUT ALL of these...

on my page
www.diac.com/~ekwall2/voynich/folding101.shtml (top of the page),

I have 11 .gifs, the first 8 are what ES said were the "how to READ
'em" folded gallows

Number 11 is the ODD one to me, as I was "shown" this one by ES, as
ALSO being a "change your KEY" with the 8 characters enclosed under
it. Todate I have _NOT_ been able to find were it is! I Think now
that you have given me the Links (thanks again) I will look for it.

11 (above) whatever page it is on. is a LONG gallows too!!

finally, I know people are propably saying "What kind of Fre*cking
IDIOT is this guy??" hey, I swear I didn't ASK for this!! I Even noted
my page "WON" a LOONEY.COM ~Loon of the Month~ award - Cool?  - uncool
when I see the other monthly contenders... (ha.haaa) but I will stand
on a stack of Bibles in front of ANY court in the land - with my
mother present at my side - raise my hand and say "YES" I was
~visited~ by ES in Oct 2000. For what it's worth I'm honest to a
fault, but THATS my story - I'm sticking by it!!

Take care and good luck
