My fault - I should really have paused to reflect on the reliability of a 
source who finds it in themselves to write "mathmaticain". :-/

All the same, it seems fairly clear that Vigenere was inspired by Porta 
(even though Porta was born after him) - so who was Porta inspired by?

Specifically, does anyone know if he got the idea of using astrological 
symbols for letters from Porta, or was that from elsewhere? Note that 
vowels = inner planets, as per my original AAH guess. :-)
