Look at my Historical Precedents document:

http://champollion.nu/english/voynich/precednt.html

About 2/3 of the way through, you'll see:

************************************************************************
************************* CAPPELLI - GALLOWS
CHARACTERS ***************
************************************************************************

..... and the top of Capelli's letter that shows gallows
embellishments. I
can't tell you how excited the whole list got when we
looked at this!
This letter was written in 1165. Rafaw Prinke also has
pic's of documents
with gallows embellishments on his Voynich page:

http://hum.amu.edu.pl/~rafalp/HERM/VMS/palgraf.htm

Last but not least, on the pictures of illuminated
manuscripts on
the popular book, available from Amazon:

Writing : The Story of Alphabets and Scripts
(Discoveries Series)
by Georges Jean. Paperback - 207 pages (April 1992)
Harry N Abrams; ISBN: 0810928930

..... two of the Ms. images have gallows embellishments!
They're not
as dramatic as these other samples, but I believe that
one of these
dates to 1400.

In documents other than the VMs, the gallows are
embellishments of letters, and
not letters themselves.
