Re: VMS -- Yellow Centaurea (f02r)

Hi Dana,

Hmmm... first lion's tooth, and now centaurea... notice a pattern?

When I was thinking about indexing mechanisms not so long ago, I wondered if the botanical images were nothing to do with botany, but instead were some kind of *referential shorthand* to index that page.

So: a page with data related to a "Leo" code could have a lion's tooth plant on, a page with data related to a "Sagittarius" code could have centaurea on, and so forth: basically, *indexing by association*. Then, someone need only be familiar with astrological plant associations to make the connection.

Even though the folios may have been rebound in completely the wrong order, it should still be possible to see if there are other adjacent astrological associations on nearby pages: ie, Cancer - Leo - Virgo might still be in sequence, as could Scorpio - Sagittarius - Capricorn (and so on).

Of course, if "lion's tooth" and "centaurea" both post-date the VMS, this is probably just a blind alley. :-)

Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
