I thought Prester John was a king from Ethiopia.

Basically, Sir John Mandeville never went to India, but needed to mention Prester John (to support his claim that he had been to India), as "everyone" knew about the powerful leader/king Prester John in India and his fabulous wealth... however, it was no more than a medieval urban myth.
