BASSNETT , Susan E. Revising a Biography:A New
Interpretation of the Life of
Elizabeth Jane Weston (Westonia), based on her
autogiographical poem
on the occasion of the death of her mother

English, French, and German biographers of the poet
Elizabeth Jane Weston
(Westonia) from John Evelyn onwards consistently give
her birthplace as
England, c. 1582 and list her as the daughter of an
English recusant. Her
subsequent life in Bohemia, as a prodigy at the court
of Rudolph II, can
be traced through her extant published volume
Parthenicon. The present
essay examines a text excluded from that volume,
Westonia's obituary poem
on the death of her mother Joanna, and reveals that
Joanna was in fact
wife of Edward Kelley, the alchemist, the Joanna
Cowper referred to in
Dr Dee's Diary for the first time in 1583. Biographers
of Edward Kelley
have never made the connection between his life and
that of his step-
daughter, and almost all biographers of Westonia have
been unaware of their
relationship. This essay proves that Westonia was
indeed the daughter of
Edward Kelley's wife Joanna and suggests that the
evidence provided by the
obituary poem shows the need for a radical revision of
existing
biographical information on both Kelley and on
Westonia, together with a
rereading of Westonia's published works in the light
of this new
