The key question is - did Bright produce his Characterie from a clean 
slate, or did he derive parts of it from other shorthand systems of the time?

I've seen (brief) mention of European Reformation shorthand systems 
(devised to take down Protestant sermons), but don't know if these have 
been covered systematically anywhere.

There may have been yet other specialised shorthand systems that history 
has somehow forgotten. :-/
