I personally think the characters on 57v are related to a
transistion in the author's learning curve, starting a few pages
before 49v. These symbols, including the "walking" picnic table,
are part of an early shorthand system, and apparently unrelated to
the earlier herbal pages.
This adds some support to my "student notebook" theory, since I
believe that the author entered a phase where he was learning a
new script as part of his regular education. It's also interesting
to me that these characters are not from any medical script I can
locate, but from a religiously oriented script, which might mark a
time when the author entered some advanced seminary training.
This training usually included learning some sort of system that
enabled the student to take dictation and record sermons.
