If you consider the time period, you'll see that extremely complex
mneumonic systems were readily absorbed, that shorthand systems
containing hundreds of symbols were learned fluently within a
month, and a very complex ideology that ties
everything-to-everything was a mainstay in education. An highly
complex symbol system would have been just another mental
exercise.
