Dear list,
The Fitzwilliam museum in Cambridge, wich claims to
have the largest collection of vellum manuscripts in the world after the
Vatican,
has decided to cooperate with the Oce compagny to
digital scan all their manuscripts and put them online.
The 22 most valueable ones are already
done.
Oce has developed a new technique wich makes
16-bit TIFF format possible to create 36 to 144 Meg. files of each folio
!!.
Without even touching it and the possibility to
scan at an angle of 30 degrees so the manuscripts hardly have to be
opened.
Ultra-violet and infra-red radiation are almost
reduced to 0 in the proces.Part of the scans is
accesable already on:
Time for someone with a lot of persuasive force to
call the Beinecke I would say....
Cheers,Joh.
