DR ANTONIO CRIMINISI Microsoft, Cambridge, UK

"BRINGING PICTORIAL SPACE TO LIFE:
computer techniques for the analysis of paintings."

Dr Criminisi has designed a computer method of reading flat pictures in three dimensions. This is a form of artificial vision that makes no assumptions without asking for guidance. (That is, it does not exercise the simple-minded tyranny associated with Computer Aided Design programs.)

Dr Criminisi's method was originally designed for reading photographs, but has been applied to good effect in the investigation of paintings. It can be used in this way because it not only analyses the image in terms of the three-dimensional structure of the scene that is shown, but also permits the user to explore inconsistencies and inaccuracies.

The lecture will take place in Room 1 and will be preceded by the Society's AGM, at 1715.
Number 43 is on the East side of Gordon Square. The nearest Underground stations are Euston, Euston Square and Russell Square.

There is no charge for attending the lecture. For further information about the Leonardo da Vinci Society or about the lecture, please contact J. V. Field: Email jv.field@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx, Tel and Fax +44.20.7736.9198, or consult the Society's website: http://www.bbk.ac.uk/hafvm/leonardo/index.html.
