Just as a point of information:  Saturn's rings can be seen in a good
pair of binoculars at 7x (along with Titan). You can also see one of
Jupiter's
dark bands, and the four Galilean satellites.  I've never seen Jupiter's
Red Spot in my 2.5 inch refractor at ~120x.

This might be the place to note the theory that the 'galaxy' in the VMs
is Andromeda has the problem that the galaxy in question is nearly
edge-on to us.
