One of my favourites (and favourite by far) is Aberto Manguel and 
Gianni Guadalupi's "Dictionary of Imaginary Places". Add to that
the Codex Seraphinianus, and Italo Calvino's "Invisible Cities", and
everything points to an Italian origin for the VMS!
