Hi Luis,

The Sephiroth Tree and the Christian crosses - was the VMS artist oblivious to the conflict between the symbols? or was this coexistence something perfectly normal in contemporary manuscripts or paintings?

Which Christian crosses? The "cross-like thing" in the hand of a nymph in the balneological section is very possibly something else entirely (GC and I debated this on-list not so very long ago).

Also: the Egyptian inverse hyperbolic spiral in f56r (flagged by Stan Tenen) is likewise interesting: IIRC, In the Quattrocento, most things imported into Northern Italy from Egypt appear to have arrived via Venice - which was also the locus for much of interest surrounding hieroglyphics (all the suggested translations, etc).

My inference from all of this is that there are likely to be many (and various) sources for the VMS' herbal images... but I just wish we could track down even one of them definitively! *sigh* :-o

Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
