Re: VMs: Re: Hebrew Kabbalistic Cryptography
Hi Luis,
In light of the recent exchanges re: Tree (Finding), this is an avenue
definitely worth exploring further. Nick, I know at first it seemed
remote, but I think it makes sense to explore this further? I bet Donald
did not find the 'finding' all that surprising, after all.
My suspicion that one part of the encoding process involves removing the
vowels would seem to correlate with the code-maker's knowledge of either
Hebrew or shorthand.
In fact, I'd go so far as to suggest that these two strands may well have
been coincident in the Quattrocento: that is, European shorthand scribes
may have been influenced by the increasing knowledge of Hebrew to develop
their own vowel-less type of (wax-tablet) shorthand, which was perhaps
later recorded as Mr Ratcliff's system.
GC has talked about religious shorthands a few times: so perhaps we're both
reaching back towards the same thing here. :-)
Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
