FWIW, I'm pretty sure that the scanner I was using was 1200dpi, which should give an interpolation-free 400dpi result. I've worked on interpolation algorithms on and off for 15 years, so I'm fairly sure I'm right on this one. :-)


That in itself should be
sufficient to conclude that scans over 300 dpi for medieval manuscripts are
unnecessary.

I just want the higher resolution so I can try to filter the half-tone out and see what's there to see once you do. A much better solution (once the Beinecke has finished restoring the VMS - the map pages were especially in need of restoration, AIUI) would be a decent modern scan, but what can you do? :-o
