Re: VMs: Why VMs spaces behave like normal word spaces
I want to chime in with my own two cents worth.
I think that one of the reasons for the half-spaces
is to differentiate the letters when they're used to
mean numbers.
As an example, look at f66r. Tenth line from the
bottom, fifth word. In the number correspondences,
this is 1558. Note there is a full space before and
after the word, and each letter is separated by a
half-space.
Three lines below that, fifth word, is 1572. It's
slightly more crowded, but note that each letter is
still cleanly separated from the ones around it.
On f68r2, the fifth word in the third line of text at
the top, is 1615. Letters are still separated by a
half-space.
There are more examples, but those will do.
Since I'm out here already, I'll skootch out on the
branch just a bit farther, and speculate that this
implies the characters used for the numbers also
have letter values. Otherwise, why bother?
