As a pharmacist's son, I'd also point out that many of them seem to have emerged from the same well-spring as modern generic drug names: I'm sure a pharmacopeia would contain at least one of tartalyn, farabyn, marmaryn, paafyrin, cetenoylyn, gabrynyn, nyrylyn or nybyryn. :-)

And what about our old friend aspyryn? :-)
