This (again) comes down to tacit-vs-explicit - my bet is that a 
cryptologist with a good feel for language would have been able to achieve 
these results from a pair cipher's interior language as a result of knowing 
*tacitly* (but not necessarily *explicitly*) how language stats 'work'.
