I'm not sure that the text was actually "composed", which may certainly be a large part of the problem. I see no reason to assume that the author did not just sit down and start writing whatever came out of his pen. I feel like this may be the key to both the large character set, and the low entropy. Something like "written glossolalia", but without the "speaking in tongues" overtone.

Just a thought.
