Re: VMs: Re: VMS-List-Archive Search Engine

No. If it were possible for you to take your own images of the Voynich (which would have to be done with permission) then you could probably distribute those as you see fit.

The key is that a drawing, picture, or any other image of an object is "owned" by the artist. The original object does not need to be copyrighted to imbue that property on the image.

Though.......nowdays that is changing. There have been some fights recently on the 3 stooges. The family has been able to successfully stop people from producing their own images (even drawings) of what is essentially just 3 people. And I believe that the "Joshua Tree" has been restricted as to use in photographs and art forms. How someone can "copyright" a tree is beyond me...

My point is just that we should not feel bad about distributing the images of the VMS as long as we properly credit the source. Selling the original images would be a no-no. Now, if you made some kind of Andy Warhol-esque painting based on the images you would be OK.

So, your saying I can take my "own pictures" of the copyflo images

maybe tilted a little left or right / more or less light,
and 'post' them on the web? ? There is only one vms (only 1 moon)

The copyright is not on the document itself (ie the VMS) but the image. If I take a picture of the Moon you can take your own pictures of the moon and distribute them as you see fit, but you CANNOT distribute my picture unless I give specific permission.

If you used the picture to get a scholarly debate on the web as to whether a certain crater is Tycho or Copernicus I would not take offense. If you used it as a cover to your new book I would go after you with all I got.

It is important to separate that the VMS is not copyrighted, but the images may be.
