VMs: f78r pairified...

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd pair-transcribe the first paragraph of f78r (Leonell Strong's preferred page). Apart from noticing that the only English word in the EVA transcription was "cheeky", what did I find?

If I remove spaces and then insert spaces after {e|ee|eee|eo}, 63 out of 86 "words" then begin with <dy>, equivalent to a 73.2% probability (ie an information content of about half a bit).

This is a highly structured result at the pair-level, and would seem to be acutely incompatible with the kind of glyph-transcription and polyalphabetic cipher Strong claimed. It's hard to see how any proposed "straight polyalpha" cipher solution could ever be reconciled with these kind of stats. I've previously criticised Strong's assault based on the multiple interpretations he gave to the two separate glyphs in <qo>, but this would seem to be an equally powerful criticism.

IMO, this result seems to point to <dy>'s use not only as a coherent pair (ie as a unit within the stream), but also as some kind of cryptographic null when following {e|ee|eee|eo} characters.

Alternatively, if this is some kind of "linguistic null" (like the "u" following "q") in a novel alphabet, why would it require two following glyphs to express it? To me, this all points to weird crypto - but YMMV, of course. :-)

Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
