VMs: Books lying flat (was 'Yet another page')

A while ago GC asked

Here's another picture of a library (albeit much later, c.1740) with
books lying flat on the shelves.

I have put a reproduction at

The painting is by Carl Fredrik Svan, probably the Library at Rånäs
Manor in Uppland. c1740. (The scan is by Rolf.)
