Re: VMs: Anthony Askham's zodiacal volvelles and similar Irish volvelles
Hi Luis,
Excellent find! I've already sent an email about it to the Yale volvelle
historian I've corresponded with in the past, and will be sure to pass on
any response I get from her to the list. It's true that she's more focused
on volvelles in printed books, but this sounds like something that would be
well worth seeing for anyone interested in volvelles. :-)
I also note in the Beinecke's catalogue description of MS337 that it
contains a number of small maps, as well as some larger fold-out maps...
coincidence? :-o
It might also be worth finding out if there were other translations or
copies of Sacro Bosco done around that time, and (if so) whether they
shared the same volvelle features as Askham's copy.
One promising-looking (if 54-year old) source for this kind of enquiry:-
Joannes de Sacro Bosco, De sphaera; L. Thorndike, ed., The Sphere
of Sacrobosco and its Commentators (Chicago, 1949) pp. 76-117.
This was mentioned on a Quattrocento Sacro Bosco manuscript (probably from
Florence), also at the Beinecke:-

The Beinecke also has this earlier one (from 1281):-

Very interesting, thanks! :-)
Cheers, .....Nick Pelling......
