VMs: Re: Cappelli's abbreviations
I was reading my copy of Allen's Star Names and 2 things struck me when I was reading the section on Leo
1) The babalonian word for Leo was Aru. That reminded me of the words I found in the "erased" text on August "de Lapara". Could para be a word for lion in a language I don't know? Or maybe Lapara for leopard?
2) There is a sentence: " The symbol [meaning the astrological symbol for Leo] has been supposed to portray the animal's mane, but seems more appropriate to the other extremity; the Hyginus of 1488 and the Albumasar of 1489 showing this latter member [the tail] of extraordinary length, twisting between the hind legs and over the back" which is a very good description of the "lion" in f72v3 (August).
I will try and find copies of the pictures from those 2 books if I can. Perhaps the picture based upon that of one of those two.
