Re: Re: Sagittarius, was: VMs: Costamagna and abbreviation...

Thanks, Rene & Dana-
well... granted there is a crossbow there in that Leo link. I was actually hoping for a Sagittarius (centaurus with saetae, or arrows) holding the device; something that could really be pointed out inequivocally as a potential source of inspiration.

Was it the VMS author's original idea or was it copied from someone else? By tracing at least one reliable iconographic source (since it seems a rather rare design), I thought we had a better chance of pinning at least one geographic location he/she may have visited before preparing f73v.

On reflection, of course this would not mean much at all, since:

1) the source could likely have been moved at anytime after the VMS author saw it, and the move may not be documented;

2) the VMS author could have moved (it is surprising the degree of mobility these guys had in those days of no Eurail passes or minicords),

3) the source itself could have been copied (multiple times) and the copies could have been exposed anywhere, etc.

Oh well - it may seem futile, but I'd still would like to see one such Sagittarius. I suppose the game will always be afoot and we'll just have to deal with the fact that we'll never get anything remotely like a library card saying "on this date, VMS author checked out this work".
Although... who knows?

Luis
