VMs: Q: Theories about "4o" at word beginning?

Just another question from the neophyte:

Are there theories why the "4o" sequence seemingly appears only at word/group 
beginnings?

I haven't found anything yet, but it reminds me of medieval German, where the 
letter "s" would be written differently at the _end_ of a word, or in the 
middle. Likewise, the "ss" combination would be expressed by a different letter 
again which later turned into what is nowadays the "s-sharp" (the character 
which lookes like a greek beta).

Just a thought from a German.
