VMs: Porta and the inquisition
In the second link I posted Porta seems to advise wariness with respect to
detection, especially when related to the inquisition. He goes into great
detail on a variety of secret writing and it seems, IMO, to be an obsession.
When someone thinks this highly of secrecy then it appears to me that a
method of hidden writing would be a clear objective when under suspicion
from the inquistion. Part of his warning talks of torture and other methods
of extracing secret information.
Also let's not forget that hidden messages were the provenance of high
levels in society. Like today, with government concern about the
dissemination of cryptographic techniques, they also would have been wary of
those using these techniques. Maybe Porta was putting two fingures up to the
establishment at the same time as protecting unpublished work.
