Really? So if one can not identify captions the illustration is unknown? For
example if I was to post you a jpeg of an elephant captioned in a script you
couldn't read it you couldn't recognize it was an elephant until you
deciphered the script?

I'd say it depends on the amount of information in the picture. If the
thing's got four legs, and a trunk and etc., I'll recognize it as being an
elephant. As long as I only see a grey blob, it might as well be a closeup
of a mouse.
The T-O-maps without labels are just an "o" with two lines on the inside, so
although I agree there is a good probability for a T-O-map, to me there
currently is no proof that the VM illustrations really are this. For what
it's worth, they also resemble symbols used in Germany for gas stations.
