VMs: Drawings

Is there a consensus on how the VM drawings were made? For example,were 
they outlined with a quill pen and then colored with a brush? Were 
colored pigments worked into the vellum with some kind of stylus? Has 
anyone examined the question of what kinds of pigments were used?
