Ruy López de Segura - who wrote his famous book on chess in 1561 - was
definitely a priest (he also tried to become a bishop but was turned down)
- but a Jesuit priest? No. :-(
BTW, chess (as we recognise it today) only emerged at the end of the 15th
century. Here's Gareth Williams' accessible account of early modern chess
(including a tournament from 1575 where Ruy got beaten):-

PS: enough chess trivia, already! :-o
