You're looking at the right spot. The letter-type
shapes in the left half is where it says 'cobj'
(but that can't really be made out clearly enough.
The big T of Tepenec, which is the most visible
thing on the copy I am looking at, is essentially
invisible on the scan.
I have a second-generation photocopy of the article
by Voynich:
A preliminary sketch of the history of the
Roger Bacon cipher Manuscript; transactions of
the college of Physicians of Philadelphia,
Vol. 43, 1921, pp.415-430. The signature is shown
on p.421. The original is likely to be
significantly clearer and worth looking for.
He also writes:
When I brought this manuscript to
America the margins of the first page had the
appearance of being blank, but an accident to
a photostatic reproduction of this page revealed
the fact that an underexposure of the plate brings
out a faded autograph in the lower margin.
Chemicals were applied to the margins and
the autograph, Jacobus de Tepenecz, became visible,
with some illegible figures below it.
Cheers, Rene
