When I started writing my first chess program, my colleague,
mathematician Lloyd Shapley, was horrified: he felt "solving"
chess would destroy it as a pleasurable and challenging
human pastime.  Of course, he was an even better Kriegsspiel
player than chess player at the time, so I wasn't threatening
his entire future happiness.
