Re: VMs: Beinecke & MrSID...
Hi
I run macs - supposed to be the world's best for image handling, and
so Lizard abandons them. Sigh
Many hours later, re-installing stuff and whatever...
Tried all that and no images are available. Did the site go down?

Hi Nick,
BTW, LizardTech also released (IIRC) a Java viewer for MrSID files,
which
should work fine under Linux (if somewhat slower). Might be worth
trying to
dig up, though.
LizardTech orphaned a bunch of operating systems with their release of
Version 4.0, including MacOS. A search of their web-site turns up
documentation of how to use the Mac versions and the Java viewer, but
it's
nowhere to be found.
However, a link on the main page to their Japanese web-site reveals
that the
MrSID viewer for Mac OS 8/9 is still downloadable, and can be found
here:
http://www.lizardtech.co.jp/download/mrsid/
If you're running OS X, you'll need to have Netscape and/or Explorer
installed in your Classic Applications folder.
Hope this helps some of you.
Also, there is no reason why Beinecke can't set up a MrSID viewer
server on
their web-site to display these images on any system, as demonstrated
by the
following web-site at the University of Virginia:
http://iris.lib.virginia.edu/mrsid/
Best wishes,
Clay
