I guess that was exactly it - the process looks completely harmless (except of the
exposure to light, which was only 10 seconds and within reasonable intensity). So
if there were any chemicals used, it was mainly for revealing the signature.
Apparently they succeeded, but it later disappeared again. I believe what can be
seen today is due to former residue and the impressions made by pen. Hopefully,
the new graphic filters may help there.
Baresh probably could have spotted something already - with magnifying glass -
since he certainly could see some traces of erasure or scratches and probably
even got the whole word "Tepenec". I suspect he knew more about the VM
history and his interest in solving it was more than just scientific :-). It certainly
looks like he was obsessed with it.
According to my last posting about Marci, he was losing his eyesight and
went at the end completely blind. That would suggest he could not write his letter
to Kircher himself, but apparently he did. I wrote to Lanskroun website, where I
got that information, asking them if they knew specifically when did he go blind,
since that may fix the year of the letter: 1665 or 1666 (he died 16th of April 1667).
It may certainly explain why he sent the VM to Kircher, as he wrote, "shortly" after he inherited it.

Jan
