Well, the there is no doubt at all that the retouched daiin is there!

If one samples the 2 inks and the vellum with the colour inspector plugin (in 
ImageJ you can have several regions of interest by pressing Shift) one can 
see a minimal difference in saturation betwen the 2 inks and the vellum, but 
not between the 2 inks. The hue is, as you mentioned, virtually the same for 
the 3 and the main difference between the 3 is in the brightness.

Just for the record, it is Ruifrok & Johnston's method, not mine. I just wrote 
the ImageJ plugin.
