Nice find!
There are two possibilities. Either Voynich was
exaggerating to the point of not speaking the
truth, or he was talking about another case
(i.e. not the Mondragone).

If you're still planning to go to the Beinecke,
be sure to look through the box with his 
correspondence about this episode.
