Hello Nick,
"z" (meaning "from") is in Czech one word and it is pronounced separately, sounding like "z" in zero; separately it sounds little bit like "the", which they would transcribe as "dz". There is invisible "e" pronounced there, which turns "visible" if the next word starts with consonant "s" or "z", eg. they write "ze severu" (meaning "from North").
I pressume we cannot have a word without at least one syllable, so I would treat it also as one
syllable (but only if it stands separately as a WORD, otherwise it must be treated just like any other consonant, say in "zebra").
There are several single-letter Czech words, mostly prepositions or conjunctions:
consonants: k, s, v, z ( meaning "at", "with", "in", "from")
vowels: a, i, o, u (meaning "and", "and" - in the sense 'not only ...but also', "about", "near")
There are also combination of words wirhout vowels, e.g.
"strc, prst, skrz, krk, smrk, drb, etc. (all being one syllable) or "zmrzl, prskl" (being two syllables:
zmr-zl, prs-kl).
I believe this is not seen to such extent in any other Slavic language - and they can even pronounce it :-).
Also, two-letter combination "ch" is pronounced like in Scottish "loch", but it is treated as a sigle
consonant and even single letter - in their alphabet, it is positioned between "h" and "i",
so watch for it in their telephone books :-). Standard sorting programs, positioning all
words starting with "ch" under "c", will not work there :-).
