These are not numbers; it's just a series of commas, pretty much ornamental 
like in the rings above and below.

The paint is also not a "visible effort to hide them". If somebody wanted to 
delete the "numbers", why not just scratch them off the vellum, as was usually 
done...?

P.S.: It's very interesting for me to note how, since the advent of the new 
Beinecke images, discussion on the list has shifted from direct codebreaking 
attempts to peripheral arguments about the history of the manuscript, 
rebindings of the book etc. Actually, quite the opposite of what I'd expected...
