I don't agree. Maybe in Germanic and Roman languages, but definitely 
not in Slavonic languages. There (or at least in Czech and Slovak I 
am perfectly familiar with) the double letters are quite rare, 
limited mainly to combinations of a prefix ending with some consonant 
and a root beginning with the same consonant. In Persian (I know, a 
bit exotic, but still an indogerman/indoeuropean language) double 
letters also occur rather rarely.
