Most estimates run to between 4,000 and 6,000 languages currently spoken. It
would be impossible to estimate the number of extinct languages that have
left no written traces. In any case, of the presently spoken languages,
UNESCO predicts that between 50 and 90 percent will be extinct within the
next hundred years (personally, I think that 90% is quite unnecessarily
pessimistic).
