Fair enough, I can't argue with that.  Using just 
'common sense' can certainly trip you up big time.

I agree, but firstly what is significant seems to be 
highly subjective.   Secondly, I am not an expert in 
languages, and I can't become one without years of study 
so I have to follow my gut feeling as to what is 
noteworthy and post details to this forum, which includes 
experts of all types.   That way I benefit from their 
experience and hopefully will not spend ages studying a 
phenomena which is common and well understood.  I have
changed tack a number of times due to feedback in this
manner.

At the moment I'm trying to condense what I think I've 
found into the simplest and purest form (a small block 
of text that can replicate the entire manuscript).  At 
that point I can then try it with hundreds of other 
documents.   If it turns out that I have wasted my time
then so be it!  :-)
