Yes, even nowadays you can buy vellum, calf, sheep, or goat!

My theory (in which I don't believe much) is: 
and Italian (more probably Venitian than Sicilian)
wrote it in an obscure language which he had learnt
during his travels. Just like I, if I wanted to
write a secret journal, would write it in Sakao,
in an alphabet derived from medieval Latin cursive.
