Re: VMs: Re: Leo Levitov questions

1 + 1 = 2 only in some systems of mathematics. To say
that 1 + 1 = 2, you must state whose mathematics you
are using. But then again, you expect people to
assume that you are using a base ten system of
calculation.

Facts are social constructs as well. A fact of
course, being nothing more than an observation
acknowledged by a group of soi disant experts. Facts
are contingent upon the needs of a self-declared group
of "experts." What is a fact? 50 years ago, people
who suffered from alcoholism were just told they were
bums, irresponsible, morally deficient, etc. But now
the same group of people is told, "you have a disease,
a fact ascertained by psychologists." The person has
not changed, and neither has the condition. The only
thing changed, of course, is the "fact" because a
self-declared group of experts/authorities have
declared it to be a fact.

For other examples of the contentious nature of facts,
please refer to the current presidential campaign.

Cheers.
