I think you're both right :-)

Worth checking up but it is not very likely to 
be as much the breakthrough as Brumbaugh
suggests. After all, Brumbaugh did not come up
with a credible solution to the VMs, and the 
reference seems to have been lost.
It would have to be in his book. Nick, do you
have a copy?
