This is interesting, but I think not necessarily always true.

A long age ago when I was at school, I taught myself to write left-
handed (as well as right-handed as instructed.) This evolved into a
style where I wrote almost "upside-down" as it were - from the top and
left to right but from _above_, with my left wrist very much crooked.
The penmanship using a real nib left much to be desired, but I very
seldom if ever smudged the writing.

Unlikely perhaps, in the case quoted, but I submit by no means
impossible. If this manuscript was written as I describe but from the
bottom, with a little care the ink would be well dried before any chance
of smudging by the wrist or sleeve.
