VMs: More on Brumbaugh & Plato in Milan...
Hi everyone,
At the British Library the other day, I had a quick look at the book of the
"Plato Microfilm Project" (1968) to see if I could find anything like the
manuscript Brumbaugh mentioned: there, it listed 21 Plato manuscripts held
in Milan (all at the Ambrosian Library, IIRC), a number neither impossibly
large nor trivially small.
An appendix also lists the authors of various transcriptions, including
three Milanese mss:-
E90 Sup (Bekker)
D56 Sup (Bekker / Dodds / Bluck)
D71 Sup (Bekker / Brumbaugh)
http://www.ambrosiana.it/
According to the Ambrosiano's catalogue of Greek mss, the correct name for
"D 71 Sup" is now "MB 247". Obviously, my best current guess is that this
D71 Sup / MB 247 is the most likely candidate for Brumbaugh's
inspiration... but all the same, the Ambrosiano website notes that he first
cited this ms in his (1961) "Plato on the One. The Hypotheses in the
Parmenides", well before 1972 (perhaps based on Bekker's translation?). So,
even though it is certain he had a particular interest in this ms, it's
hard to be sure that this is what we're looking for. *sigh*
Cheers, .....Nick Pelling.....
