Re: Re: Fw: Re: VMs: Medieval Cryptography Info

Hello Rene and John,

right, it could not have been Rudolph II. That makes much more sense and puts the whole
thing in completely new perspective. Comparing of two handwritings for same author is much
more accurate than dating of an unknown handwriting - the former evaluation is even recognized
in courts today. Since we can guess only remotely the age of the VM script, we however know
with high probability that the "comment" could not have been done before the VM was written
(actually it could and be added later before the book was bound together, but that is highly
unlikely :-). And it was not done by the author - the comment is written in different hand and
script than the VM. For logical support: the author would have no reason to write the key there himself and it would defeat the purpose of using the unknown script in the first place.

I guess it is time now to reevaluate the opinion that "the age of the manuscript cannot be
established by carbon dating" or by any other technological method - it should have been tried
anyway. The reason that particular period of time had some irregularities (of carbon isotope
content in the atmosphere or the speed of decay, I do not remember exactly) may be true, but we still should be able to create the non-linear graph from dated samples, do approximations and establish the probability of the result. Also, I guess our instruments are now more accurate
than before, that is they can probably measure to more decimal places - but that was never
quoted as an objection :-).

True, it may only tell us the age of the vellum - and there are signs that some text may have been
written on even older or reused vellum (if that is possible), but we should not speculate on test
which was never done. If - on the other way - we can compare the content of carbon isotope
from different, accurately dated vellums, we should be able to establish the age of the VM
vellum with some accuracy. Sure, we do not know what we find and then again - the VM
could not be older than the age of vellum it is written on. To be safe, more sheets of vellum
should be tested to establish if in fact different age vellums were used.

We should not leave this stone unturned. That of course may not be of interest of some parties,
but tested it should be. Frankly speaking, we may even have more problems afterwards - as it
is almost always when we discover something about the VM - but does not it make it even more interesting?
